Colleen Tighe Johnson is a proud Gomeroi Yinarr woman who possesses an ardent love for art and fashion.
Colleen’s designs for her fashion label, Buluuy Mirrii, meaning Black Star, harness the spirit of her ancestors to revive the Gomeroi Dreaming Stories. Buluuy Mirrii synthesises Aboriginal art, culture and fashion, showcasing local Aboriginal talent, a cause of which Colleen is highly passionate about.
The collections include Street ready-to-wear as well as Evening couture, encompassing elements of the Story Telling of the Gomeroi people, the Dreaming, the collaborations of artists and designers with focus on the personal narrative of each individual creative.
Colleen began her journey with Buluuy Mirrii in 2013, showcasing at the Indigenous Fashion Showcase for L’Oreal’s Australian Fashion Week in Melbourne. Since then, her designs have graced the world stage in New York, Canada, New Zealand and Paris to name a few.
With a vision to continue representing one of the world’s oldest living cultures on the global stage, Buluuy Mirrii targets high profile personalities in the media, entertainment and public arena. Colleen provides this market with the opportunity to design a piece that not only tells a cultural story but also their personal story, bringing the design to life and creating a truly unique artwork.
Colleen’s greater aspiration for her brand is to empower the lives of indigenous Australians with a focus on the youth. Through her own success with Buluuy Mirrii, Colleen will provide pathways, training and skills opportunity for the next generation of Aboriginals with a passion for the Creative Industries including but not limited to fashion, photography, design and modelling.
