2017 Indigenous Designer Scholarship – CEA Fashion Accelerator

The scholarship is designed to support an Indigenous designer wishing to acquire the skills and experience needed to launch a career in the fashion industry. Recipients of this scholarship will gain entry to the 2017 CEA Fashion Accelerator Program, which will provide training, workspace, technical services, mentoring and networks needed to grow and develop a sustainable fashion business.

The scholarship covers full program fees as well as funds to cover the development of a mini range and small production run.

The program includes

  • Professional business and technical support delivered by CEA and industry experts
  • Dedicated 1:1 mentoring sessions
  • Access to facilities and industrial grade machines and equipment
  • Designated workspace and shared cutting table
  • Access to trend forecasting site used by international fashion companies
  • Access to a design library, shared conference room/showroom and kitchen

Who can apply

The scholarship is open to all Indigenous emerging designers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent currently living Australia.

Program location

The Fashion Accelerator program is delivered by Creative Enterprise Australia’s (CEA) at QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct at Kelvin Grove in Brisbane.

Regional designers from outside the Brisbane area are encouraged to apply and will be expected to work on site in Brisbane for the program duration (February to August 2017).

Selection criteria

  • Demonstrated creativity and design skills, commitment to self-employment in the fashion industry
  • Enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to stay within the agreed terms
  • Commitment to establish a new business venture (with ABN) or to be in startup or development phase (but incorporated for less than five years)
  • Fashion or design qualification or relevant industry experience
  • Design of niche,  innovative ready-to-wear contemporary Indigenous apparel or accessories that have global market potential
  • Willingness to be mentored and to be committed to the program and industry required delivery dates
  • Possessing a team spirit and ability to work in a team environment and share space within the CEA Fashion Accelerator guidelines
  • Willingness to attend industry events to support awareness of the Indigenous fashion on behalf of CEA
  • Willingness to participate in the Fashion Accelerator process in evaluation surveys to provide financial, sales and employment information to measure the effectiveness and impact of the facility and program.
