New Board Appointments
QUT Creative Enterprise Australia have appointed three new Board members
We are pleased to welcome new Directors are joining the QUT Creative Enterprise Australia Board as Non-Executive Directors: Anne-Marie Birkill, Mandy Thomas and Robina Xavier. They bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to help grow CEA and our initiatives further.
“We are excited about the wealth of experience that the new Directors are bringing to the CEA Board” said Chairman, Michael Smellie. “We would also like to thank retiring Directors Ruth Drinkwater, Scott Sheppard and Rod Wissler who have dedicated their time and skills to furthering the growth of the creative industries and creative companies.”

Non-Executive Director, General Partner OneVentures Innovation Fund
Anne-Marie Birkill is a Partner in OneVentures, the manager for two venture capital funds and a number of associated co-investment funds with $130M funds under management. OneVentures backs innovative companies with global relevance in healthcare, education, mobile, cloud computing and new media. Anne-Marie is a Director for portfolio companies Paloma Mobile, TheBestDay, Charm Health and Peak3.
Anne-Marie has forged a career in the field of technology commercialisation. She has worked with hundreds of early-stage technology companies as senior executive, advisor and business coach. Her previous roles have included CEO of i.lab Incubator, various senior management appointments at UniQuest and Director of ASX listed energy storage company RedFlow Limited.
An active member of the innovation community, she is an Industry Fellow with The UQ Business School and a Director for Springboard Enterprises Australia, an accelerator that supports women entrepreneurs. She has won a number of awards acknowledging her contribution including the 2014 WiT Life Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award and was named as one of YWCAs 125 Leading Women in 2013. She is currently the WiT Life Sciences Ambassador.
Executive Dean, Creative Industries Faculty at QUT, QUT Creative Enterprise Australia Non-Executive Director
Mandy is the Executive Dean of the Creative Industries Faculty at QUT. Formerly the Dean of Research Development at QUT, Professor Thomas is responsible for leading the Faculty in an important stage of its development as it consolidates its position as one of Australia’s premier locations for study across such fields as Architecture, Film, Media, Journalism, Interactive Visual Design, Creative Writing, Acting, Fashion, Music and Dance.
Professor Thomas is an anthropologist who has undertaken research in both Vietnam and Australia. She has published widely on the lives of Vietnamese people who live under a communist regime and has also worked extensively with migrant groups in Australia on the migration experience. Before joining QUT, Professor Thomas was Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training) at the Australian National University in Canberra, and was the Australian Research Council’s Executive Director Humanities and Creative Arts from 2004-06. She brings to the board her experience in executive leadership roles within the university sector.
Executive Dean, QUT Business School, QUT Creative Enterprise Australia Non-Executive Director
Professor Robina Xavier is Executive Dean of the QUT Business School in Brisbane, Australia. She has more than 25 years’ experience in academia and industry with specialist expertise in investor relations and crisis management.
Robina is the former Head of the School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations at the QUT Business School where she was also responsible for the Business School’s international business and languages portfolio. Prior to joining QUT, Robina worked as a consultant to both the private and public sectors in Australia, specialising in corporate and financial relations. She completed her masters’ research in investor relations and holds a PhD in crisis management.
Robina has sat on a number of government advisory groups in Australia, is a former National President of the Australian peak industry body, the Public Relations Institute of Australia and is a former chair of the industry’s National Education Committee. Robina is a Fellow of both the Public Relations Institute of Australia and the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.
