QUT Creative Enterprise Australia projects Like a Photon onto the global stage
QUT Creative Enterprise Australia (CEA) announces its investment in Brisbane-based startup, Like a Photon Creative, a content creation company specialising in the development and execution of content for children.
Established by QUT Creative Enterprise Australia in 2013, the CEA Startup Fund is the first dedicated investment fund to specialise in accelerating the growth of companies in the creative industries, with $1.2M available for commercial investment in high-growth, scalable businesses.
Creative tech duo and QUT Alumnae, Kristen Souvlis and Nadine Bates, founded Like a Photon Creative in 2012 and recently were one of only 16 companies globally to be invited to pitch for Sesame Street, where they went on to become the first Australian female writers and producers to work on the show, and the third Australian company to be commissioned by the program.
Co-Founder of Like A Photon Creative, Kristen Souvlis, said the seed funding will allow the business to undertake market testing to further develop its newest project, Pixapops, an immersive digital multi-platform of books, videos and games for kids.
“Essentially, Pixapops will allow us to become a scalable company on the global stage, with our move into digital expected to drive international sales. Equipped with the seed funding invested in Like A Photon Creative from QUT Creative Enterprise Australia we are looking to raise Series A in about 18 months’ time,” Ms Souvlis said.
Co-Founder, Nadine Bates, added: “It can be challenging for women in this industry to get their foot in the door and to be given the opportunity to show their talent and professionalism. We have been very lucky, but have also worked incredibly hard, to have the success we have. The investment from QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, and the guidance from the team has been a driving force behind our determination to get out there and show everyone what we have.”
CEO of QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, Anna Rooke, added: “Our Startup Fund enables proof of concept development to provide a solid platform for companies to then go on to secure further capital.
“Like a Photon Creative has demonstrated the potential to deliver its service to a global market and is a great example of the creative potential of women in creative tech. The sphere of children’s content creation, especially in digital, is in its growth stage and we recognise that potential not only as a successful content creation enterprise but as a way to effect change by producing open-minded and educated content for young people.
“Like a Photon Creative was also a semi-finalist at CEA’s Creative3 Pitch last year – Australia’s only event designed to connect creative entrepreneurs with investors. We recognised the strong potential of the Like a Photon Creative team so continued to work alongside them post-event to refine their commercial model for investment. This is not only testament to the high-quality applicants that come through the Creative3 Pitch event but it also attests to CEA’s ability to spot talented founders early,” Ms Rooke added.
The CEA Startup Fund invests between $25,000 and $150,000 in businesses with high-growth potential in the creative industries in Australia. The fund aims to invest in emerging and startup businesses with significant growth opportunities to tackle large global markets and potential to attract other investors.
